Fourth Quarter: Best Practices and Trends

We are living in dynamic times, when the conditions of nonprofit leadership are rapidly changing. The savvy nonprofit leader remains attuned to this changing environment and makes changes and adjustments to be sure the organization is maintaining a commitment to best practices. In one year of service as a board member, you may not see major changes, but it is important to stay abreast of the context so that over time, your nonprofit is on the leading edge.

As an example, fifteen years ago, the expectations of board members regarding fiduciary responsibility and knowledge of financial health were vague for nonprofits. But the corporate scandals of the late 1990s and early 2000s raised the bar, and today board members are expected to be much more attentive to their fiduciary duties. As new changes in governance, nonprofit strategies and community expectations shape the environment of your nonprofit, you should be sure you stay on top of them.
