ALLIANCE OF ARIZONA NONPROFITS FULLY SUPPORTS HB2639 TO ESTABLISH JOHN MCCAIN PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Feb. 6, 2020): The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, a sponsoring organization of AmeriCorps VISTA, a national service program that has helped lift communities and individuals out of poverty for more than 50 years, is supporting a legislative bill to establish the John McCain Public Service Scholarship Fund.
The Fund would provide matching scholarship support for students who have completed a national service program like AmeriCorps VISTA and who use the scholarship at an Arizona college or university within three years of completing their service.
AmeriCorps members serving for one year are eligible for a $6,000 scholarship from the federally funded program. HB2639, sponsored by Arizona Representative Walt Blackman (R-District 6) and co-sponsored by Representative Aaron Lieberman (D-District 28), would establish the matching John McCain Public Service Scholarship Fund using $5 million in one-time funds.
“AmeriCorps members address pressing local needs across the state and make a lasting impact on those communities at the same time they gain valuable skills and experience to support and advance their careers,” said Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits Chief Executive Officer Kristen Merrifield. “We believe it’s important to recognize their service to Arizona by helping them achieve their personal goals.”
In 2019, 1,858 AmeriCorps members served in more than 600 locations across the state including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, veteran’s facilities and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations. Collectively, they earned more than $5 million in education awards for their service.
