ALLIANCE OF ARIZONA NONPROFITS OPPOSES BILLS THAT CALL FOR EXCLUSION OF ANY NONPROFITS FROM PARTICIPATING IN ARIZONA 2-1-1
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Feb. 5, 2020): While The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits supports dedicated funding for the Arizona 2-1-1 information and referral system because of the tremendous benefit it provides in assisting Arizonans to find critical services and resources, the Alliance is opposing proposed legislation as written that excludes nonprofits from participating in the program now or that may exclude others in the future.
The Alliance is asking that current language in SB1328 and HB2388, which appropriates $1.5 million for the Arizona 2-1-1 program, be amended to remove the exclusionary language in the bills.
“The Alliance has long supported a dedicated funding source for the Arizona 2-1-1 system, but we believe that the legislation as written sets a dangerous precedent for exclusion of any segment of the nonprofit sector and may have a chilling effect on the advocacy efforts of many other nonprofit organizations or sectors that may be excluded from programs in the future,” said Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. “We believe that the Arizona 2-1-1 system provides a valuable service to our communities and should include all nonprofit organizations that wish to participate.”
Merrifield said that the Arizona 2-1-1 system is currently inadequately funded and that the Alliance supports “permanent, dedicated funding sources to maintain, promote and expand Arizona 2-1-1 as a valuable public service in our communities.”
