Designed specifically for business professionals and community members interested in serving on a nonprofit board, this half-day in-person workshop will explain the roles, responsibilities and expectations involved.  Whether you are thinking about committing to board service or already on a board, this workshop will give you the information you need. Created by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, Business On Board features nonprofit leaders and partners working together for a half day of valuable insight on a range of board service roles, including:

  • The Fiduciary Role
  • The Legal Role
  • The Fundraising Role

Kristen Merrifield
Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits

Kristen brings extensive leadership to the Alliance, most recently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA), the largest trade association in Arizona serving over 10,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs. Through her previous roles at ASBA, the ASU Foundation and the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, she brings over 12 years of association and nonprofit knowledge and expertise to her new role as Alliance CEO. Kristen is an active participant in the business and non-profit community serving as a productive member and President-Elect of the Arizona Society of Association Executives; Silver Level Supporter, Board Member and Treasurer of Gabriel’s Angels; past board member of the Phoenix Workforce Connection; member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE); graduate of the ASU Lodestar Center’s Generation Next Nonprofit Leadership Academy; graduate of the ASBA Executive Business Mentoring Program; and also earned her Certificate of Association Management from ASAE. Kristen also holds the prestigious Certified Association Executive designation. She has dedicated her career to serving others and is a respected and well-rounded leader.

Jennifer Purcell
Director of Community Engagement
Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits

Jennifer oversees the Alliance’s community outreach efforts including capacity building workshops, educational webinars, annual conference, partnership agreements and fundraising for the organization. She is also responsible for managing the Arizona Gives ( program and Arizona Gives Day, a 24-hour online statewide giving campaign held in April each year.

Prior to joining the Alliance, Jennifer was the Community Affairs Manager at BMO Harris Bank where she developed the annual philanthropic strategy and corporate giving program within Arizona, assisted executives with board engagement and built relationships with the nonprofit community. Prior to her Community Affairs position, she held the position of Assistant Vice President - Marketing/Communications. During her 16 years with the bank, Jennifer also organized annual employee volunteer programs, was Chair of its local diversity council and President of the bank’s young professionals group nationwide. Jennifer is a graduate of the Valley Leadership Institute Class 36 and served as Marketing Chair for the Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse (ICAN) during its inaugural years. Currently, she is an active member of the Monarch Council at the Desert Botanical Garden.

Nathan Jones
General Counsel
The NARBHA Institute, Inc

Nathan is General Counsel for the NARBHA Institute (formerly Northern Arizona Regional Behavioral Health Authority), which serves as the nonprofit partner in a joint venture Medicaid managed care organization (Health Choice Integrated Care) and which oversees subsidiary companies providing services related to social determinants of health, specifically housing and economic development. He provides legal advice to the Institute on a wide variety of matters including joint ventures, real estate, land use, commercial and residential leasing, employee benefits, corporate governance, tax, contract negotiation and administrative law. Nathan holds a JD from Boston University and a certification in healthcare compliance from the Compliance Certification Board

Laura Spiegel
Nonprofit Consulting Services 

Laura Spiegel is passionate about the power of good leadership and is committed to developing mission-driven teams, leaders, and organizations that desire to reach their fullest potentials.  With more than 40 years experience developing excellence in nonprofit organizations and the people who lead them, Ms. Spiegel offers strengths in leadership development of executives & emerging leaders, coaching, Board development, organizational development, program design and development, change management, team building, proposal development & grant writing, fund development, and strategic and action planning.  Ms. Spiegel holds a Master of Social Work degree from Arizona State University where she specialized in human services administration and management. Prior to receiving her Masters degree, Ms. Spiegel was the regional director of a national youth leadership organization based in Phoenix, AZ.
