The Organization for Nonprofits Executives (ONE), serving nonprofit leaders in the Greater Phoenix area, recently announced the recipients of the 16th Annual Nonprofit ‘Director of the Year’ Awards at its annual Nonprofit Leader Day event held on March 29th at the Desert Willow Conference Center. The awards, consisting of original custom artwork, were presented by ONE Executive Director Michael Barry and Georgia Musgrave of event sponsor The Duffy Group, Inc., with the assistance of Kristy Siefkin of Fox 10 News as Master of Ceremonies.
Each year these awards seek to recognize nonprofit CEOs/Executive Directors who are outstanding examples of certain principles ONE values as representations of excellence in the management and leadership of nonprofit organizations in Arizona.
This year’s Community Partnership Award recipient is Merilee Fowler, Executive Director of MATFORCE in Prescott Valley. Merilee is committed to working in partnership to build healthier communities by striving to eliminate substance abuse and its effects in Yavapai County. She leads her team in recognizing the need and facilitating the dialogue between community members and community organizations to reduce prescription drug misuse and abuse.
Jennifer Caraway, Founder and Executive Director of The Joy Bus is the recipient of this year’s Organizational Accomplishment and Innovation Award. Jennifer, a restauranteur, founded the Joy Bus to deliver free healthy meals to cancer patients along with companionship. Her vision in creating the Joy Bus Diner provided income as well as a commercial kitchen for cooking cancer patient meals. She pours her heart and expertise into ensuring that those homebound with cancer are served in many ways.
ONE’s Leader of Distinction Award is presented annually to a leader with 10 or more consecutive years of experience as chief professional officer of an Arizona nonprofit who has exhibited qualities of outstanding leadership. This year’s Leader of Distinction is Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers. When faced with a new goal or challenge, Darlene’s instincts are to innovate, strategize, and build relationships. Her instincts are well honed over 40 years of nonprofit work, 16 of them at UMOM New Day Centers, an Arizona leader providing shelter services to those experiencing homelessness. Darlene models leadership and persistence to overcome what seems impossible. A believer in the simple equation: housing + employment = an end to homelessness, she reminds her staff to never accept the status quo.
Additional sponsors include JP Griffin Group, Wells Fargo Bank, Alliance Bank of Arizona, Avenir Consulting Partners, CBR – Creative Business Resources, Mutual of America and National Bank of Arizona.
