Vote YES for Your Community:
Vote YES for Proposition 100
The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits urges the people of Arizona to VOTE YES on Proposition 100 when they cast their ballots in the May 18 special election proposing a temporary, 3-year 1-cent sales tax increase to balance the state budget. We believe that, because nearly 9 out of 10 citizens are willing to make direct donations every year to nonprofits, they will make one more contribution through a temporary sales tax that provides necessary funds to sustain essential services.
If Proposition 100 fails, nonprofits (many of which receive 60 percent and more of their financial support from government grants and contracts) will not be able to sustain more cuts in state funding. The Arizona Legislature already passed an alternative budget that becomes law if the voters do not pass Proposition 100. That alternative budget includes more cuts to nonprofits which are the providers contracted by state agencies to offer services to Arizona’s most vulnerable populations. If that happens, many nonprofits will cut programs and some may permanently close their doors.
Read the position statement of the Alliance in support of Proposition 100 to understand why this issue is important for the entire nonprofit sector.
And encourage your nonprofit supporters:
- If not already a registered voter, register to vote in time to cast a ballot for the May 18 special election (you must register by midnight on Friday, April 19), and remember...
- VOTE YES on Proposition 100 on May 18.

Serve America Signed Into Law by President Obama
On Tuesday, April 21, President Obama signed a historic expansion of national service programs, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (HR 1388) into law. This legislation will improve and expand national and community service programs and strengthen the infrastructure for volunteerism within the nonprofit community. The President also announced the nomination of Maria Eitel to be chief executive of the Corporation for National and Community Service which will administer the programs.

Find Resources in the Recovery Act (Stimulus)
Arizona can expect to receive close to $6 billion resulting from passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Some of these funds must be distributed within 90 days; others will be allocated over the next 6-18 months. Many of these dollars could ultimately be distributed to Arizona nonprofits through a variety of federal, state and local programs.
The Alliance is offering Arizona nonprofits a number of ways to learn about the opportunities raised by these stimulus funds to assist them during the current recession:
- View information from our Apr 17 Forum: How Will the Federal Stimulus Package Impact Arizona Nonprofits? Featuring representatives of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, the National Council of Nonprofits and local government, this forum offered nonprofits and funders with the best available information about how these funds may be allocated and provide nonprofits and funders with a better understanding of how nonprofits will be impacted and what they can/should do to ensure they are prepared to distribute the funds to their respective clients. See information in our Recovery Act section of this website.

- The National Council of Nonprofits has produced a series of special reports on the federal stimulus law to help nonprofits understand the implications for their work.
